Nonetheless, the final third of the book is one heart-stopping scene after another as Anouk and her friends race against the clock to stop the universe from essentially ripping apart, and a final battle with Rennar brings a satisfying conclusion to this duology. The pace is wildly off balance, though: the threat in London is made urgent when it’s plot convenient and shoved to the side otherwise, and Anouk’s education at the Cottage feels shoehorned in as another story completely. Transformed from a timid maid to a fierce leader in Grim Lovelies (BCCB 10/18), Anouk has her new confidence sorely tested here as she fails to pass the witch trials, and her character believably oscillates between wishful thinking and utter desperation while she figures out a way to move forward. Her plan backfires completely, however, leaving her stripped of her magic and facing a foe far deadlier than a simple coven.
